Devayat Khavad is a Gujarati lok sahityakar — a folk-literature artist — who performs at lok dayro programmes in Gujarat. He comes from Dudhai, a village in Muli taluka of Surendranagar district, and is based in Rajkot. His programmes move between veer ras, the heroic storytelling of Saurashtra, devotional songs, and songs about daughters and family. He is widely known for “Rano Rana Ni Rite”, released as a single in January 2022.

The Dayro
What is a dayro?
A lok dayro is an evening of Gujarati folk literature performed live — stories, verse and song, usually carried by the harmonium and a circle of listeners who stay late. It is the stage Devayat Khavad works on.
- Vaat
- A spoken tale — often of a local hero, a saint or a point of honour — told with pauses, asides and the crowd’s responses built in.
- Duha
- Short rhymed couplets, recited to land a moral or sharpen a moment in the story.
- Bhajan
- Devotional songs; many dayro programmes carry religious as well as social messages.
- Lok geet
- Folk songs that the audience often already knows — the moments a dayro turns into a sing-along.
